From Aang to Zuko

A picture list of all the characters in Avatar - The Last Airbender.

Aang (Avatar Aang). Element: AIR.
Powers: A master airbender and the current Avatar, capable of mastering each of the four elemental bending arts; has strong ties to the Spirit World and is able to enter and exit through meditation. In times of strong emotional duress or danger, his powerful "Avatar state" is triggered, greatly enhancing his bending abilities for a short amount of time.

Background: Aang lived and trained until he was twelve in the Southern Air Temple a hundred years before. The temple elders chose to tell him that he is the Avatar sooner than was customary, fearing that war was near. This information disrupted Aang's comfortable and carefree life considerably. He ultimately decided to run away, furious that he would be separated from his kindly mentor and guardian, Monk Gyatso, to train at another temple. He and his flying bison, Appa, ran into a nasty storm close to the South Pole, which knocked them out of the air and into the ocean. Aang's avatar spirit awoke and encased them in an iceberg where both were hidden until being discovered by Katara and Sokka a hundred years later.

Personality: Despite Aang's tremendous power, he is also still a kid in many ways. He is very friendly; before he was frozen he had many friends all over the world, and has made many more since embarking on his journey. He cares deeply for his newfound friends, Katara and Sokka; his animal guide, Appa; and Momo, his pet winged-lemur. Fun loving and free-spirited, he always manages to have a good time and often draws others into his games. One of his favorite pastimes is animal riding, from penguins to giant koi fish. He maintains a cheerful disposition at almost all times and loves to play around.

The last airbender and the Avatar, Aang sometimes feels a bit lonely and overwhelmed by the pressure that is on him. As we saw in "The Southern Air Temple," most of his friends and teachers are long gone and he misses them dearly. Both powerful and naturally talented at bending, he lacks discipline when learning and tends to be impatient. Aang is very curious about the current time period he has come to be in and tries to remain optimistic about the state of the world and his mission.

Appa. Aang's flying bison. Element: Air.
Powers: Ability to fly and swim; brute strength and ferocity in combat.

Background: An enormous flying bison, Appa has long been Aang's pet, loyal friend, and animal guide. He helped Aang run away a century ago and became trapped in an iceberg with him during a massive storm near the South Pole. Thus far we have seen no other flying bison in the present, though "The Southern Air Temple" showed that in the past Appa was once just one of many.

Personality: Docile and good-natured, Appa prefers to eat, sleep, and have his belly rubbed rather than engage in more active pursuits. He loves Aang and has become fond of Sokka and Katara, as well. Strong and faithful, when Aang and his friends are threatened Appa acts as a fierce protector, and while humans may not be able to hear the sound of the bison whistle, Appa can hear it from far away and will come running (or flying) immediately when it is blown.

Arnook (Chief Arnook). Element: Water.
Powers: Leadership

Background: Father of Princess Yue, Chief Arnook is the leader of the Northern Water Tribe on the North Pole. When his daughter was born sickly, he pleaded successfully with the spirits to save her life, but he was also given a vision that one day she would become one with the Moon Spirit.

Personality: Wise and compassionate, Arnook loves his daughter and his people unconditionally. He welcomes Sokka and Katara without the prejudice that many others express for members of the Southern Water Tribe. While he is very open-minded and shows that it is important to listen to what others have to share (despite where they come from), Arnook also has strong respect for his tribe's customs, including those regarding gender roles.

Azula (Princess Azula). Element: Fire.
Powers: firebending, especially the ability to generate and control lightning

Background: Azula is Prince Zuko's fourteen year old sister. She was educated at the Royal Fire Nation Academy for Girls along with her friends, Mai and Ty Lee. Azula was present at Zuko's agni kai, or fire duel, with their father. Ozai charged her with the task of arresting her brother and uncle. She was defeated and humiliated by Zuko and Katara on the day of her coronation as Fire Lord.

Personality: Talented and cruel, Azula revels in both her firebending skills and her position as a member of the royal family. She delights in her brother's disgrace and enthusiastically pursued him and their uncle, Iroh. Azula, like her brother, is highly intelligent and a perfectionist. Perhaps most telling is her demonstrated willingness to manipulate and deceive both friend and foe alike to achieve her objectives.

Azulon (Fire Lord Azulon). Element: Fire.
Powers: master firebender

Background: Azulon was the son of Fire Lord Sozin; father of Iroh and Ozai; and grandfather of Zuko, Azula, and Lu Ten (Iroh's son). He was also married to a woman named Ila, who passed away sometime during his reign. Azulon reigned as Fire Lord for twenty-three years before his death.

Landmarks of his term as Fire Lord included the Battle of Garsai, which he led fearlessly; the conquering of the Yuseng Provinces; and Iroh's famous 600-day siege of Ba-Sing-Se. The same night Ozai's wife, Ursa, left her family, Azulon was found dead. After his funeral service, Ozai was named Fire Lord.

Personality: Azulon was a fearless leader of the Fire Nation, and an unforgiving and ruthless person all around. It would appear that he preferred his first-born son, Iroh, over his second-born, Ozai. Azulon had a distaste for weakness and was intolerant of failure. Ozai named his daughter Azula after him.

Bato. Element: Water.
Powers: A skilled Water Tribe warrior, adept at sailing.

Background: Bato is a close friend of Hakoda, Sokka and Katara's father. He left with him two years before to help defend the Earth Kingdom. He was wounded badly in combat and was left in an Earth Kingdom abbey to heal.

Personality: Mischievous and good-humored, Bato and Hakoda were legendary pranksters in their youth. As an adult warrior, Bato is also temperate and wise, helping Sokka to understand both his own pain of separation and that experienced by others.

Blue Spirit.
Powers: Talented with broad swords and hand-to-hand combat. Ambidextrous.

Background: The Blue Spirit was Zuko's alter ego. Iroh convinced Zuko to let go of the Blue Spirit after releasing Appa from imprisonment by Long-Feng.

Boulder. Element: Earth.

Background: The Boulder is a fighter who participates in Earth Rumble Six, and was the former champion of the earthbending tournament. He defeats all his opponents before facing the current champ, the Blind Bandit, who defeats him easily.

Personality: The Boulder is a loud-mouthed, arrogant fighter who is rather self-absorbed. He speaks only in the third person and thinks very highly of himself and his earthbending abilities, though it would seem he is a very sore loser.

The Boulder may be a parody of the professional wrestler The Rock.

Broadsword man. Element: Earth.
Powers: Proficient in the use of broadswords.

Background: Little is known about the background of this man. He is seen walking thorugh the village in which Iroh and Zuko are begging in "The Swamp."

Personality: The Broadswords Man is arrogant and cruel. He thinks himself superior to "common people" and enjoys humiliating those he believes are beneath him, as when he made Iroh sing and dance at sword point.

Bumi (King Bumi of Omashu). Element: Earth.
Powers: Master Earthbender

Background: Bumi was Aang's childhood friend and lived in the Earth Kingdom city of Omashu. Together they would get into trouble and once used the city's mail delivery system as a super fast slide. After Aang's disappearance, Bumi mastered earthbending and became king of that city, growing older but still remaining very much the same person that he was a hundred years before. He allowed himself and Omashu to be captured, much to the dismay of the cities populace. He refused to let Aang free him, stating that it was better to wait for the ideal moment to strike. On the day of Black Sun that is exactly what he did. With the Firebender's being powerless, he reclaimed Omashu and later went on to liberate Ba-Sing-Se with the othe members of the White Lotus.

Personality: Intelligent and probably a little crazy, Bumi is a genuine soul who believes in using your head to solve problems. Clever and eccentric, he is all about being creative and it is safe to say he marches to the beat of his own drummer. Despite his age, Bumi never stopped being young at heart, and has both a well developed sense of humor and a decidedly fun outlook on life.
